Siding project: Ketwitz residence
A two-storey re-side at the Ketwitz residence, replacing worn siding with a new vinyl profile and rebuilding the trim details around the windows, corners and porch.
What the work involved
- Removal of the failing siding and inspection of the sheathing and corners.
- Replacement of soft trim boards and repair of the wall beneath the porch.
- New vinyl siding in a profile suited to the house, with new corner posts.
- New window trim, porch fascia and soffit so the details line up with the new courses.
- New aluminum fascia and a re-pitched gutter line to shed water away from the wall.
Small details that change the look
Two houses on the same street can use identical siding and look completely different, because the trim width, the corner treatment and the way the porch detail is handled carry most of the visual weight. On this project we widened the window trim slightly and rebuilt the porch fascia so the new siding had a clean edge to die into, which is what makes the finished elevation look deliberate.
