Siding project: Cohen residence full re-side
The Cohen residence received a complete siding replacement: old coverings removed, the wall inspected and wrapped, and new siding installed with new soffit, fascia and colour-matched aluminum trim.
What the work involved
- Removal of the existing wall covering and inspection of the sheathing for rot and moisture.
- Repair of damaged sheathing and trim boards before anything new was installed.
- House wrap installed with correctly lapped seams, plus foam insulation board on the exposed elevations.
- New vinyl siding installed to straight, level courses, with new corner posts and window trim.
- New soffit and fascia, detailed so the gutter line sits true.
- Colour-matched aluminum trim on the fascia, frieze and openings so the house reads as one finished exterior.
Why we open the wall
Re-siding a house is the only opportunity you will have for decades to see what is happening behind the covering. Rot at the bottom of a wall, failed window sills and crushed sheathing are all invisible from the outside until they appear as stains inside. Because the siding was coming off anyway, the repair work at the Cohen residence cost a fraction of what it would have cost to return later and open the wall again.
